During a brainstorm session at Farm Hack, a community that brings together engineers and farmers, a problem was brought up. Ben spends too much time checking the temperature in his greenhouse. Despite that, accidents happen which have resulted in staggering losses.
Commercial alert systems exist, but he complained that they were either too expensive or impractical, requiring a land-line in the greenhouse for example. I designed Fido to be farmer-assembled and programmable via text message. Periodic updates, daily summaries, and alerts of temperatures leaving user-set bounds can be configured for up to 16 different contacts. In addition, data is logged to an SD card for later analysis.
Ben has enjoyed the system and it has been replicated with the success in the Farm Hack community.
